Amazing. Unbelievable when you realize he couldn't read but played it all by ear. Utterly incredible.

The "happy man" as Ray Brown called him, was a total ear player and ambidextrous. I read a story in his biography that he often was not conscious of what key he was playing in and if during a break somebody was tapping a spoon on a glass of water that Garner was likely to start the next song in the same key that the glass was pitched to. The bass player would then coax him into the usual key they played.
